The UNESCO-Uzbekistan Beruniy Prize for Scientific Research on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) aims to promote and honour excellence in the field of ethics of AI, multidisciplinary research and scientific cooperation. UNESCO invites the governments of Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions, the non-governmental organizations maintaining official partnerships with UNESCO and active in relevant fields covered by the Prize, the UNESCO Chairs, the Category 2 Centres, the international scientific unions and universities to submit nominations for the 2025 inaugural edition of the UNESCO-Uzbekistan Beruniy Prize for Scientific Research on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Awarded every two years to three prize-winners, its purpose is to reward individuals, institutions, or organizations for groundbreaking contributions to AI ethics research, international scientific collaboration, and the practical application, which had a significant transformational impact on a national, regional or global scale. Each of the three individual prize-winners will receive a financial award of USD 30,000, a Beruniy medal and a certificate.

Eligibility

  • There is no age limit for the candidates.
  • Candidatures of women scientists are highly encouraged.
  • The Prize cannot be awarded to the same person more than once.

The following entities can submit the nominations:

  • Governments of Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions
  • Non-governmental organisations maintaining official partnerships with UNESCO and active in relevant fields covered by the Prize
  • UNESCO Chairs
  • International Scientific Unions
  • Universities

The call for nominations for the Prize's first edition is now open until June 30th, 2025.
