Research, Extension, Innovation and Resource Mobilization Research Profile

Kisii University aims to be a leading University through academic research and social welfare. In order to promote research welfare and engender a vibrant research culture amongst staff and students, facilitative frameworks are being formulated at the university. The frameworks are equally geared at strengthening the university’s innovation and extension function and implementing its objective of commitment to social welfare by facilitating linkage between research output and community development. To this end the university always establishes linkages with other international and local Universities on various programs.

These programs entail staff and student exchange, mentorship programs and joint research activities. The University further aims to contribute to the achievement of academic excellence by promoting integration of research results and teaching. Staff and students are thus encouraged and supported to enable the University to compete with peer institutions and be ranked amongst the top Universities in Research consultancy, Innovation and Extension.

Kisii University recognizes that Research consultancy, Innovation and Extension forms a necessary and vital part of its function as a University. Through its policies and practices, it seeks to encourage the pursuit of excellence in research and innovation that is undertaken and the extension efforts emanating from this efforts. The university further supports areas which demonstrate or hold the promise of showing excellence in research, innovation and extension. The University has set a research agenda to conduct basic research that will provide basis for developing new knowledge and applied research that will contextualize prevailing knowledge in the different academic fields which are relevant through defined research categories.

Research, Extension, Innovation and Resource Mobilization Mission Statement

The mission of the department of Research, Extension, Innovation and Resource mobilization at Kisii University is to sustain production of high quality research and consultancy and dissemination of Knowledge, skills and competencies for the advancement of humanity.

This is achieved through provision of research based results for fields of Agriculture, and environmental conservation, Science, Information Communication Technology, Socio-Economics and Culture, Law and Governance, Education, Health and Community development. This premium of research is embedded in the University’s strategic plan.

The REIRM department seeks to:

·       Grow research, consultancy capability and capacity

·       Ensure strong research-teaching nexus

·       Link research and consultancy to wider societal responsibilities.

Dr. Evans Okemwa Kenanda holds both Bachelor of Science (Chemistry & Biochemistry) and Master of Science (chemistry) degrees from the Egerton University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Organic Chemistry of the University of Nairobi. His research interest areas are Natural Product Research, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Phytochemistry. He has published a number of research articles in peer-refereed international journals. He has extensive working experience ranging from being a Head of Chemistry Department (Kavumu College of Education, Rwanda), to a Dean, School of Pure and Applied Sciences (Kisii University, Kenya).  He has also served as a Deputy Registrar (Research and Extension) in the Department of Research, Extension, Innovation and Resource Mobilization and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Kisii University. Currently he is the Ag. Registrar REIRM.

Erick Oyaro Oyunge

Erick Oyaro Works as an Assistant Research Fellow (Data) on a number of Research projects on aspects of Performing literature reviews, Updating Research website, Projects’ Monitoring and Evaluation, preparing progress reports, responding to emails relating to research, attending project meetings, Preparing & Monitoring the project budget.

He is Core Facilitator working with the University of Minnesota Extension to implement the Rural Leadership Training program, Coordinator for the Transforming Universities for a Changing Climate research project, working as research assistant of Home to school project.

Erick is trained in B.Sc. Actuarial Science from Kisii University and a diploma in Information Technology from KCA University. He is interested in Data science, data analytics and new trends on data science and Artificial Intelligence in Research.

LINKAGES OFFICER

He is the Linkages Officer; his responsibility revolves around the linkman to interest groups and institutions that share the University vision and mission of being a world class University in matters of Academic Excellency. He is a degree holder in Library and Information Science, from Egerton University which has positioned him to work in various areas of responsibility and exposed him to the world. He is a member of Kenya Library Association and Chairperson of KLA Nyanza branch. In 2012, he was selected to be part of an 8 member delegation by Kenya Library Association to travel to Stockholm, Sweden, to participate in building strong Library Associations Conference. His work mainly entails connections to the University especially with County governments through the University development partner Books for Africa foundation with its headquarters in the United States of America, where Kisii University acquires learning materials for the Students pursuing various courses and by large both high schools and primary schools benefit as well from the donations.

Lilian Gisesa

Lilian Gisesa

Lilian Gisesa is trained in Information Sciences having received her B.Sc. (Information Sciences) from Moi University. She has a bias towards Library Information Management and Archives and Records management in digital platforms. Her work experience ranges from being an Information Officer, Audio-Visual Archivist, Special Collections Librarian, Academic Librarian and Electronic Resources Librarian. Currently venturing into Public Librarianship. She has written on issues of ICT and conflict resolution, ICT in curating Archival information, electronic records management in institutions of higher learning, Civic information dissemination and the role of academic libraries; gender issues affecting students in institutions of higher learning among others. Currently she has keen interest on research data management and the teaching of research methods to undergraduate students.

Membership

 A member of the Standing committee on ICT and E-Resources at the Kenya Libraries and Information Consortium (the one that provides e-resources for Kenyan Universities and Research Institutions) where she serves as the secretary.

A member of the Menyenya High School Board of Management, serving as the secretary to the education committee.

Patron of the Kisii University Information Science Association.

Assistant Patron to the Seventh Day Adventist students at Kisii University.
